One thing I’ve learned in my travels, hotels can be somewhat impersonal. Yes, good hotels have impeccable service, and it’s nice having your bed made for you…. but there really is something special about moving in to a living space that is “yours”, at least for the duration of your stay. Vacation rentals give you that extra bit of space, and even a kitchen to make your own cup of coffee. And if your apartment happens to be in a real Castle?! or in a Houseboat?! FABULOUS!! There are a lot of unique, fun and cool places to stay in Germany that will make your visit that much more special. These make great Home Bases to explore the local area. Let me share some with you…

Vacation in a Castle!
Have you ever dreamed of living in a Castle? Well, here’s your chance! There are a number of Castles (Schlosse) in Germany who allow guests. Generally, you have an apartment within the castle with bedroom/s, bath, kitchen and living space. Many of the Castles have lovely gardens for you to enjoy, and are situated with fantastic views.
Schloss Weichs zu Regensburg– Located on the Danube River near the center of Regensburg, this Castle even comes with its own Ghost! One or two bedroom, and Family suite accommodations available…
Schloss Zingst– Perfect for your next family reunion! This 5 bedroom castle sleeps 15 people! Built in 1665, this Tuscany like castle in Querfurt is on the Romanesque RoadRomantic Road is near the Saale-Unstrut-Triasland Naturpark.
Landhaussuite am Schloss– Not IN a Castle, but actually the cottage attached to a Castle. This amazing little vacation cottage has direct views of the Rhine and the Xanten Cathedral.
Houseboat Vacation Rentals
Do you like being close to water on your vacation? How about being on the water? These House boats (Hausboots) are perfect for you then! And no, you don’t have to be a sailor… or set out to sea! These boats are tied up along the riverbank or harbor!
Hausboot Direkt an der Elbphilharmonie (House boot next to the Elbphilharmonie!)– How would you like to wake up with a view of the Elbphilharmony (Hamburg’s new Symphony Hall)… then sip your coffee or glass of wine in a calm oasis in the middle of town. This is not a ‘fishy’ experience… the Houseboat is fully upgraded with first class amenities. Bliss….
Hauboot Antje Frieda – This light and modern floating house is located on the island of Fehmarn in the Baltic Sea. Spend a relaxed day in the hammock dozing… or visit nearby attractions by bike.
On the outside, it looks like you are about to step back in time to the Middle Ages, when water powered machines. Luckily, the insides have been modernized for comfort!
Sauerwein’s Muhle- Located in Sankt Goarshausen, this 3 bedroom cottage has a sauna, so you can melt away the aches and pains you got from hiking the Rhein Steig! Go wine tasting, biking or just enjoy an evening bonfire.
Muhle & Co– Once a flour mill in Horn-Bad Meinberg, today this mill is surrounded by fields and pastures on a working farm. Because it’s in NRW, it’s perfect for cycling and long walks. Ask the owner about classes and seminars on the property.
Stay on a Farm
Want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and stay where it’s green? Why not choose to stay in a farmhouse? They are rustic, but comfortable… with loads of room to roam, and maybe even some animals!
Bauernhof Kroner– With Pony rides and a play space in the hayloft for the kids, this working farm is the perfect vacation spot for families in Lower Bavaria. They even have Ski lockers for winter trips!
Hagerhof Fewo- You won’t have to fight to get the kids off the electronics and OUTSIDE here… There are Cows, loads of kid vehicles, a trampoline, and room to roam! The modern accommodations are in former Hay Lofts, and have a wonderful airy feel. Explore nearby Eggstaett, Upper Bavaria by bike or on foot.
Western Ranch Stay- Why go to Montana when you can visit a “Western Ranch” in Memmingen (in the Algau region of Swabia Bavaria)? Ride, Bar-b-Que and even visit a thermal spa.
Vierkant Bauernhof – With 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, and even relaxed meeting rooms and a bar, this old Rheinisher farm in Grevenbroich, North Rhine-Westphalia, is a great place for a family reunion or company retreat.
Stay in a Monastery?
Well… it will be quiet…. maybe
Okonomiehof – Okonomiehof in Lichtenfels, Germany started out as a Cistercian monastery. Today there are pony rides, a petting zoo for kids, and a massage center for moms and dads.
Stay in a Winery
Ohhhh…. doesn’t that sound lovely… staying an arm’s reach from delightful German wines in an old winery. Historic and gemütlich!
d&B Former winery Palatine – This 300 year old guesthouse in Hambach is converted from an old winery. It has 3 bedrooms, and fits up to 8 people in your group. The Winehof patio is calling my name….
Zur Alten Weinkelter – Not a winery anymore, but this sweet little apartment in a half-timbered building is smack in the middle of Ellenz-Poltersdorf, Rhineland-Palatinate, a Moselle wine village.
Lake & River Houses
There is something peaceful about a vacation on a lake. That lapping sound as the water comes against the shore. Wouldn’t you like to come home to that comfort after a day of city sightseeing? There are plent of Lake Houses to rent for your German Vacation!
House on the Water Berlin- Not accessible by car, but there is a tram… this vacation place on Lake Seddin near Berlin is far enough away for relaxing, but close enough to get some sightseeing in.
Modern Apartment steps from Lake Constance– You have a choice of a one or two bedroom apartment in Meersburg. The accomadations are close to the old and new castle, and are only steps from the waterfront.
Ferienhof Löschebrand– This vacation home is situated on the edge of Lake Scharmützelsee in the health resort of Bad Saarow. Rustic and modern, with beautiful grounds. It’s the perfect place to recharge.
Dream house along the Alsterlauf river – This 4 story luxury home in Hamburg is perfect for seeing the city, but coming home to relax.

If you love wild animals and want to be right in the center of Berlin, between Alexanderplatz and Gendarmenmarkt … this apartment would be the perfect vacation place in Berlin.
Condominium Blue– This accommodation is on top of a TV station in Cologne. The decor is quite colorful. Funky, eclectic and not rustic at all. Located in the hip area of Southern Cologne, you will find restaurants and art galleries near by.
