Rich, buttery, fruit-studded Stollen falls somewhere between cake and bread. Since the 1400s, Bakers in Dresden have been producing this specialty, and you’ll find it on just about every table in Germany during the Advent Season and Christmas. Baking the Stollen at home can be a lot of work and takes time to ripen. Fortunately, you can buy AUTHENTIC German Stollen. Find Stollen with Marzipan or without, with different fruit combinations…. you can even get Stollen that looks “homemade” or one made in Dresden. The best part is that no one needs to know you didn’t spend hours in the kitchen!
What is Stollen?
Legend says that Stollen came about due to a special dispensation from the Pope. In the Middle Ages, people were instructed to fast, so the use of butter and cream went against the rules of the Church. Stollen without butter tasted horribly dry. In 1560, Prince Ernst von Sachsen reached out to Pope Urban VII on behalf of the Bakers of Dresden (and presumably their customers) to please allow them to use butter for Stollen. But only in Dresden. The Butter Brief (Butter Declaration) was a cause for celebration! And as thanks, Bakers delivered a massive 36-pound Stollen to the head of Saxony. Today they STILL celebrate with a Stollen Festival, where a massive Stollen is served for all to try on the second Sunday of Advent.
