My copy of the Dr.Oetker School Cookbook (Schulkochbuch) is a bit worn out and falling apart. There are stains on many of the pages and drips have glued some pages together. You could honestly say that this book has been used!
I got this book when I moved away from home many, many (many) years ago. Mom was such a good German cook, and so was my Oma, and I learned a lot by watching them, but as a child, I was easily distracted, and in my teens, I was too “busy”. But, then suddenly, I had my own kitchen, and I wanted to be able to continue to make the dishes that I loved so much; foods like Rouladen, Eierkuchen, Kartofel Puffer, and even the different Eintopf meals that are perfect for feeding a hungry family.

Who is Dr. Oetker?
There really was a Dr. Oetker! In 1893, Dr. August Oetker, a pharmacist, developed his first product, Backin. Backin is just Baking Powder… but Dr Oetker had the idea to sell it in packets measured out perfectly to activate 1 pound of flour. The idea was to sell high-quality products that would give the home baker perfect results every time. Today, this family owned company is being overseen by the fourth generation of Oetkers. They still create and sell quality baking products, cooking ingredients, and recipe books.
In a way Dr. Oetker is like the Betty Crocker/ Better Homes and Gardens of Germany. In a German Bookstore, you will find rows of cookbooks with the Oetker name on them… recipe books specializing in meats, vegetables, jams, baking, and grilling. I have many of them too, and I use them. (I love reading cookbooks!) The Backing, Kalte Kuche and Kochen set have been on my shelves for quite a while… and I refer to them often (especially the Backen!).

But there is something about the Dr Oetker School Cookbook. It’s a cookbook that holds your hand, but doesn’t treat you like you are stupid. And it sticks with the basics. Today so many chefs are deconstructing or adjusting recipes with flair… the Schul Kochbuch helps you get started. You get the familiar flavors that you remember and love. You get the flavors your Oma and Mama made. From there, you can make the dishes your own.
The Schulkochbuch is in German, but Dr. Oetker has published many books in English so that you can cook the German foods you love and may remember from your Omas. Some ingredients may be a little difficult to find here in the States, but not impossible.
