Wendt and Kühn Angels- The Erzgebirge Grünhainichen Angel Orchestra
Wendt & Kuhn Blonde Hand Painted Grunhainichen Angel English Horn Figurine Standing
I love my Wendt and Kuhn Angels! This Erzgebirge Angel Orchestra sits on my mantle at Christmastime. Their sweet faces make me smile. When it’s time to unpack our set of Wooden Angels, it takes me back to my childhood. When I was a little girl I would spend hours arranging and re-arranging the bands of angels, and I even imagined I could hear them play.
There are many copies of these Angels, but the original Grunhainchen Angels are made by Wendt & Kuhn. You can identify them by their sweet faces, and the fact that each of the green wings has exactly 11 dots.
Today, my kids love arranging the German Angels Band…. bringing them out of their wrappers is part of our Christmas Countdown. Every year we try to add a new instrument to our collection…
Let the Erzgebirge Angel Musicians become a tradition in your home this Christmas.

History of Woodcarvings in the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains)
Erzgebirge Angels come from the German Christmas Land, the Ore Mountains
The German Erzgebirge, Ore Mountains, are known as German Christmas Land. This mountainous area lies between Germany and the Czech Republic. The area had a lot of silver… but after a while, it ran out. Since the land is difficult to farm, the locals needed to find another way to make money. Lots of trees meant lots of wood…. and a tradition of carving began. Toys, Christmas Pyramids, German Smokers, and Christmas Angels.
Traders would come through the mountains every year to buy up the toys and carvings, and they would be sold in Christmas Markets in big cities like Nuremburg.
Today, the tradition of hand carving wooden toys and ornaments continues. Some figures are traditional, and unchanged for years, the patterns passed down through the family. Other carvers have started making new and innovative figures. Either way, the figurines and ornaments are destined to be a treasure that brings delight to your family for years to come.
The Wendt and Kühn Company

In 1915 Margarete Wendt and her friend Margarete Kühn formed their own company, Wendt and Kühn in Grünhainichen Saxony. The company makes Flower Children, Music Boxes, and of course, the famous Grünhainichen Angels. Each figure is made by hand in Saxony by one of the 155 employees. And each of the sweet faces is painted by one of four specially trained artists.
Some are blond, others brunette. Some Angels sit on little blocks, others stand. You will know the true Grünhainichen Angels by their green wings, each with exactly 11 dots.
